queen of the sun: what are the bees telling us?
this is such a wonderful film. my friends and i went to see it opening week here in portland. we had the pleasure of meeting the director, taggart siegel, who was incredibly humble. i feel so moved by this movie that i want to learn how to keep bees now. lately i have been dreaming of becoming more sustainable. i am dreaming of gardens full of flowers and vegetables, bees, and chickens laying eggs. a goal for me starting next year is to begin to make this happen.
in this movie, the beloved beekeepers spoke about the importance of keeping bees, and how they are dying from genetically modified foods, monoculture farming, and pesticides. albert einstein once said if the bees die, man would only have forty years left of life on earth. they are such hard working creatures and pollinate many of our fruits and vegetables. it is said that bee pollination contributes to about $55 million worth of crops in the state of florida alone. so the honeybees need our help! and we need the honeybees.
this weekend, there is a “tour de hives” in portland, of all the backyard beekeepers in the area. i hope to learn more about the honeybee culture and the fascinating culture of the hive. mostly, i am looking forward to learning more how to support these magical creatures.
